The story of Los Mockers is truly unusual. Formed in Montevideo in 1963, they were one of the first Uruguayan R&B bands, recorded one LP and a couple of singles in Argentina in 1966 and broke up one year later, truncating a promising career when the band members had just turned 20...

There are two unedited songs extracted from their first 1988 demo on side B, “El Sueño Rojo” and Phil Spector’s “To Know Me is to Love Me”. The Mexican-based Los Checkmates, had a more organic, innate predilection to Western rock than most contemporaries in the South American garage scene . That's because it wasn't exactly a homegrown entity, but instead was a patchwork of locals and expatriates both, some of whom originated north of the Rio Grande in Canada and America.

Relying on the extreme richness of Columbian folkloric music, Los Electrónicos used the most up-to-date studio of their time to create a new approach to the songs they played: “Utter Respect” for the songs and mood was the general slogan; total rhythmic, tonal and instrumental LIBERTY was the general result.

An Argentinian beat band from Rosario fromed by Ciro Fogliatta -who had previously been in The Wild Cats-. They recruited Litto Nebbia as their vocalist and he persuaded them to move away from performing rock 'n' roll covers to writing their own material and singing it in Spanish. Their debut single, La Respuesta was the first beat single sung in Spanish. Their album was sung entirely in Spanish. Ten of the twelve songs were penned by Nebbia. Musically, it's very diverse. Quien Vendrá Por Mi? is based on the riff of The Kinks' You Really Got Me. There's quite a bit of Merseybeat, represented by tracks like Dejame, Dejame, Lo Que Más Me Gusta A Mi, or Harás Lo Que Te Pida and En Tu Corazón. It includes their beaty first single 'A' side La Respuestra and a spattering of R'n'B and blues numbers. The band re-emerged later as Los Gatos.

In the early 80s the Medway sound was born with a flurry of records from The Milkshakes and The Prisoners. The Prisoners produced a tough version of the sound of the 60s played with great enthusiasm and lots of GoGo. The Prisoners are the definitive psychedelic garage band, clearly influenced by the likes of the Small Faces, and cited as an influence for The Charlatans and -although not cited so openly- the entire brit pop and acid jazz scenes.
