In 1964-65, while the rest of the world was otherwise preoccupied, Peru was shaking to the music of Los Saicos, purveyors of some of the crudest, most deranged, gnarled-up, snarled-up, damaged-sounding racket ever pressed onto vinyl. Had they been singing in English, in an English-speaking country, Los Saicos’ name would already be etched into history as full-blown big beat, big daddy garage rock’n’roll legends. It’s the kind of trashy minimalist deconstructed garage rock modern-day bands attempt to play today, with one crucial difference: Los Saicos were just being themselves, making the kind of music that felt right to them. In the process they created something truly brilliant and lasting.

The Situations are a four-piece from New Zealand that carries on the spirit of Flying Nun bands like The Clean or The Bats. Their tracks burst with classic melodies in the style of the Modern Lovers and Feelies, with the looseness, swagger and sense of fun of The Strange Boys and Black Lips.
