DOUBLE AGENTS 'Seemed Like A Good Idea...At The Time' (CD)
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

Their unique scuzz-fuck blend of raw punk/R&B/R'n'R/country is revealed in all its guts and glory on their new album, "Seemed Like A Good Idea...At The Time"

It Seemed Like A Good Idea ... At the Time is a work of extremes, complexity and contrast.  On the first single lifted from the album, Makin’ Eyes, moments of dark garage blues play out against splashes of peyote-fuelled Stones country rock idealism.  You Got It All fluctuates between garage rock brutality and moments of tranquil respite as Miss Kimmy’s ravaged vocals interplay with Dave Butterworth and Ryan Tandy’s guitar attack in a dialectic that walks the fine line between hope and despair.  On The Liar the Double Agents are nasty, but earnest, like a drunk pleading for a cigarette at the end of the night.  There’s old time rockin’ and rollin’ in the title track, stomping ferocity in Wasting My Time, and sun and dust stained lamenting in Sour and Vicious Man (the album’s only cover song).  It’s a little bit country, a little bit blues and a whole lot of rock’n’roll.

We are not original, we are the Origin.

Eureka Hot 3 blend the raw aged southern soul of late 60s, early 70s Funk, the free jazz, the old 50s rock & roll and the Rhythm & Blues but in a way close to Punk in terms of sound and attitude. Keeping away from revivalism they make an esential synthesis of the rhythm and the primal scream using an elemental instrumentation composed of drums, electric guitar and tenor saxophone.

HITMEN 'It Is What It Is' (2CD) Import
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

Classic 1981 and '82 albums by post-RADIO BIRDMAN/pre-HOODOO GURUS  outfit THE HITMEN get deluxe reissue treatment. Release timed to anticipate the forthcoming 3 PART 'Do The Pop! Redux' series, first part of which will be out late November (and which of course will feature birdman, The Hitmen and other Birdman related bands), and a Johnny Kannis & Chris Masuak-led Hitmen tour in December... Of course Birdman and the Gurus recent simultaneous induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame was nicely timed as well.

Formed by Birdmen CHRIS MASUAK and WARWICK GILBERT and Birdman MC/backing volcalist JOHNNY KANNIS soon after Birdman's initial demise in '78, THE HITMEN also featured future Gurus mainstays BRAD SHEPHERD and MARK KINGSMILL by the time they came to record their self-titled debut in '81 and its follow-up 'It Is What It is' in '82.

Overlooked for far too long, THE HITMEN'S music is ripe for re-evaluation, and Savage Beat!/Shock's deluxe reissues will provide ample opportunity. Each album will be accompanied by a massive booklet with lengthy notes and numerous images. More importantly, each will be expanded to include about 45 tracks, with a bounty of previously unheard demo and live material added to each set.  Hitmen classics like 'Didn't Tell The Man', 'Corridors Of Power', 'Rocket On The Elevator Up' and '15 Hours' will be featured alongside long lost fan favourites like 'Cold December' and 'Wings of Steel', as well as incredible covers of the SONICS, MC5, IGGY, 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS, BLUE OYSTER CULT, DICTATORS and the FLAMIN' GROOVIES' great 'Shake Some Action'.

The second album from Melbourne, Australia's, THE STONEAGE HEARTS features features DOM MARIANI on Guitar/Vocals; "GUILTY AS SIN" is a welcome return to Dom's garage rock roots!!

So it's no surprise this album sounds like THE STEMS circa 1985!! "Guilty As Sin" displays elements of THE REAL KIDS, THE CREATION, THE ANIMALS and THE SONICS!!

More "GARAGE" and "ROCK" than the band's debut from 2002, the aptly titled "Turn On" possessed a more POWERPOP edge. This time 'round THE STONEAGE HEARTS mine their obscure Garage record piles and deliver an ace collection of fuzz laced rippers.

STONEAGE HEARTS 'Turn On With...' (CD)

Another excellent Aussie band that features one of the members of the Hands Of Time! The Stoneage Hearts have a decidedly more '70s powerpop sound, and what a sound it is! Super-catchy stuff, with lots of biting guitars and vocal harmonies. Great covers of "Rock And Roll Girl" (Paul Collin's Beat), "I'm In Love" (Zippers) and "Stranded On A Dateless Night" (Cordell Jackson). Originals like "So Glad (That You're Gone)" and the super hard-driving "Two Timing Girl" really get my feet a stompin'! "Kimberly" mines similar territory to the Hands Of Time with its fuzzed-out guitars, wailing harp and general garage rock groove. Similarly, a cover of the Good, The Bad & The Ugly's "Houndog Man" gets the raving R&B treatment with tasty blues licks and more fab harp work. This is fantastic!

Suddenly Yours is a tribute to Nikki Sudden (1956-2006) released by Sunthunder records featuring a list of 21 artitsts including Dave Kusworth, Elliott Murphy, Phil Shöenfelt, Johan Asherton or Freddy Lynxx. Nikki Sudden was born in London on July 19, 1956. He began playing guitar after hearing T-Rex near the end of 1971. Together with his brother, Epic Soundtracks, he formed what was to become SWELL MAPS.  The Maps released 4 singles and 2 albums between 1977 and their break up in 1980. Following the demise of the Maps, Sudden began his solo career. He made two albums -Waiting On Egypt and The Bible Belt- before joining up with Birmingham guitarist, Dave Kusworth. The pair formed the Jacobites in 1983. When the Jacobites broke up in early 1986, Sudden returned to his solo career. This tribute is to pay our respects and admiration to Nikki as a musician as well as a friend. This goes for you Nikki!

VICTIMS, THE 'All Loud On The Western Front' (CD) (Import)

This could be a hell of a great series that Timberyard is doing here...last issue we had a reissue of the earliest Scientists stuff that was totally brilliant, and now here's Perth's Victims with a batch of songs recorded in 1977 and 1978. These 8 tracks don't hit quite the highs of the Scientists record; there's a lot of fairly standard sounding pogo punk and nothing approaching the hooks that a song like "Pissed On Another Planet" have, but it's still a lot of fun to hear a band that was such a big influence for a lot of what followed in Australia without having to pay ridiculous prices of $100 or more for a single (a price I've seen asked more than once!). "Television Addict" is the only song here that I already knew (from a bootleg compilation called Where Birdmen Flew from a few years back), and it's probably the best track on this record, though "Disco Junkies" is also cool with the band stretching out into a long and fairly adventurous (for the time, at least) bit of guitar noise. This record doesn't stand too strongly on its on, but as a piece of roots history it's real nice to have.
