LOS CHECKMATES 'Lo Mejor...' (LP) (10")
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

The Mexican-based Los Checkmates, had a more organic, innate predilection to Western rock than most contemporaries in the South American garage scene . That's because it wasn't exactly a homegrown entity, but instead was a patchwork of locals and expatriates both, some of whom originated north of the Rio Grande in Canada and America.

Canadian Dave Atherton started up Los Checkmates in 1966, enlisting the musical services of fellow students Joe Aleo, Kippy Albert, and Carlene Kern, while also picking up local musicians from other area universities, including Javier Batiz, who later played with Santana, and Fito de la Parra, later a member of Canned Heat. They made what became Los Checkmates' sole album, “The best... Con ¡Los Checkmates!” over a month-long period on a four-track machine. The versatility and different approaches of the young musicians, no doubt due to their varied nationalities, plus the perfect combination of their two lead singers, it all joined to make their sound something unique.

LOS ELECTRONICOS 'Tradición En Transición' (LP) (10")

Relying on the extreme richness of Columbian folkloric music, Los Electrónicos used the most up-to-date studio of their time to create a new approach to the songs they played: “Utter Respect” for the songs and mood was the general slogan; total rhythmic, tonal and instrumental LIBERTY was the general result.

LOS GATOS SALVAJES 'Wild R&B Beat From Argentina' (LP) (10")
100 Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

An Argentinian beat band from Rosario fromed by Ciro Fogliatta -who had previously been in The Wild Cats-. They recruited Litto Nebbia as their vocalist and he persuaded them to move away from performing rock 'n' roll covers to writing their own material and singing it in Spanish. Their debut single, La Respuesta was the first beat single sung in Spanish.  Their album was sung entirely in Spanish. Ten of the twelve songs were penned by Nebbia. Musically, it's very diverse. Quien Vendrá Por Mi? is based on the riff of The Kinks' You Really Got Me. There's quite a bit of Merseybeat, represented by tracks like Dejame, Dejame, Lo Que Más Me Gusta A Mi,  or Harás Lo Que Te Pida and En Tu Corazón. It includes their beaty first single 'A' side La Respuestra and a spattering of R'n'B and blues numbers. The band  re-emerged later as Los Gatos.

LOS GRIMM 'Viaje En La Alfombra Magica' (LP) (10")

An atipycal band in Madrid’s scene, LOS GRIMM were truly the vanguard of the psychedelia, though they started a band influenced by the crystal-clear melodies of THE SHADOWS and they never lost that feeling. Add those elements a superb soul voice and we have a really special band with amazing live shows but little success in album: they never even recorded an LP, only 7 singles which were most sought-after and which you can get all together NOW thanks to this ELECTRO-HARMONIX reissue!!

LOS HOLY'S 'Sueño Sicodélico' (LP) (10")

If in Peru, Los Saicos are a razor-sharp black star of the subterranean heavens, Los Holy’s are a blazing constellation. They could be considered the first local psychedelia movement of the mid-60s: they were capable of experimenting with compositions and sounds beyond the New Wave beat melodies common at the time, and all of this while remaining a basically instrumental band. The group's first LP, Sueño Sicodélico (Psychedelic Dream), is an ambitious and original album, and one of the earliest and most perfect Latin American conceptual pop records. They wrote on the back of this LP, "Los Holys symbolize the restless and evolved heart of today's youth. Do we know all of the sounds that are heard at the bottoms of the sea? Space stations don't capture sound-waves produced at thousands of light years? We will try to reproduce those sounds with our instruments and maybe they'll end up being more pleasant than the crashing of waves." Leader Walo would later found additional bands, touchstones of other facets of Peruvian rock: Telegraph Avenue and Tarkus.V

The mex "answer" to THE MONKS !!! This wild trio from Mexico not only had the same name than their american legendary counterparts, they also dressed in monks´ cloths! And this is not all... cause their aberrant lyrics and sincopated primal rhythms make us think it´s not just coincidence or "evolutive convergence". Did Los Monjes ever heard about The Monks???

LOS WALKERS 'Walking Up With...' (10")

This is a psychedelic masterpiece,  astonishing and exquisite psychedelic trip highly influenced by the Rolling Stones' Their Satanic Majesties..., incredibly good.

Featuring the ex-Mockers Polo "Salvaje" on the songwriting, lead volcals and psyched-out guitar arangements. This album is a prime example of the so-called “Rioplantense Psychedelia”. And it’s officially available again for the very first time.

NEW JUGGLER SOUND, THE 'Trouble Childs' (LP) (10")
100 Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

New Juggler Sound, Laghonia, Smog, and the first We All Together (later on some of the members reunite in the 80s) constitute the only rock saga in Latin America. With 40 years of permanence during which, although they have had their ups and downs, they always maintained a solid musical coherence oriented towards what today is defined as power pop. The best of their early magic is revealed in this anthology in all its secret splendor. New Juggler Sound marks the commencement of this productive and secretive saga during the essential years of 1965-1973. During their founding moments (and they had many, as their history is full of reinvention) they were their country's version of the Beatles. But once they gained creative freedom and left behind direct influences, they were simply a great rock and roll band with an unparalleled sound. Extremely influenced from the beginning by the Mersey Beat prevalent at that time, and guided by the exquisite vocal harmonies of the Byrds, they released two 45s on the RCA Victor label. The group soars higher into the psychedelic stratosphere and move more towards an Acid style; influenced by the Eric Clapton style in the Yardbirds and Cream. They record three 45s – included here- which are some of the most beautiful gems to ever emerge, not only in Peruvian psychedelia but for pyschedelia period. Be ready for this exhaustive COMPILATION OF THE BEST PERUVIAN ROCK SAGA.
