The Backyard Heavies from Charlotte (South Carolina) are perfect exponents of tuff combo funk. Senhorn’s and Allen Toussaint’s Sasu Enterprises: their famous hit “Soul Junction” was originally released by Scepter/Wand, whereas their lesser-known but equally magnificient “Just Keep On Truckin’ “ was pressed in very limited quantities by their locally-based own label, Scram.

BANDA UNIAO BLACK 'Yeah Yeah Yeah' (7")

“If you could have seen the black kids in Rio during the 60s… It was horrible. They all went around on the street hunched over with their heads hanging down. Then James Brown came around, Wilson Picket, and all the rest. We would dress and act just like them; that was how we learned to feel proud. We loved the energy of those American blacks. James Brown was our Martin Luther King” - Ivan Tiririca, Drummer for União Black.

Tim Maia and Cassiano of União Black found themselves among the creators of Brazilian Soul at the end of the 60s; they were the ones to set the stage for the Black Rio or Black Power movement. Ivan Tiririca, the band’s drummer, was also an official Soul DJ for all the Rio parties. The movement was short lived but it left a deep mark on musicians and the public that followed it. Today, interest has been revived thanks to an anthology – the labor of DJ Cliffy in England-, and a movie called “Brasilintime” starring Black Rio musicians and the DJs Cut Chemist and Madlib.

FULSON, LOWELL 'Tramp / Make A Little Love' (7") (Last copies!!)
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

“Tramp” has been reviewed in the September issue of the MOJO MAGAZINE, as “a pre-hip hop MASTERPIECE”... From this song came others like “The Champ” (Mohawks) and it’s been a major influence to everyone who has heard it. As a bluesman, Fulson’s chart topping days were believed to have passed, but he soon found himself high up in the R&B TOP 10 when “TRAMP” was released in 1966. Within a year, Otis and Carla had repeated the feat with their own cover of the song, and in 1968 The Mohawks completed the trio of highly sampled takes. All versions have their fans among the hip hop fraternity, and the Fulson version has been sampled by the likes of CYPRESS HILL (How I Just Could Kill A Man), EPMD (Rampage), De La Soul (Let, Let Me In), Salt & Pepa (Tramp) or Stetsasonic (No BS Allowed).

Their first album, released in 2002, was recorded at Daptone Studios and kickstarted the Kokolo craze. Their second album further expanded their audience and afforded the band performances in a score of new countries and some of the world's premier stages such as the Montreal Jazz and Glastonbury festivals and many others, where they shared the spotlight with acts ranging from Gilles Peterson, Roots Manuva, Taj Mahal and Isaac Hayes to Zap mama, Chic, Roy Ayers and Sean Kuti & Egypt 80. Their 3rd album "Love International" is being releases in March, and it combines an intoxicatiing blend of afrobeat, funk, latin, hip hop, and jazz elements. A reissue of Nathaniel Mayer most funky single. Originally released in 1966 on Fortune, it was the last single Mayer releases on the label he had been with since 1962 (Fortune had been the real epicenter of Soul music in Detroit before Berry Gordy Jr´s Tamla Motown gigantic supremacy). A great sample of Nay Dog´s raw and energetic vocal style. This is a limited edition single so better be fast! And don´t miss the definitive Nathaniel Mayer anthology on Vampisoul (and also the vinyl version of his 2005 album "I Just Want To Be Held").

An absolutely mind-melting stormer from the king of the bongos, Preston Epps. WHITE, DANNY 'Natural Soul Brother / One Love Affair' (7")
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

Another singer that mythical Allen Toussaint did productions for. “Natural Soul Brother” was recorded at the end of the 60s and released on the Minit label. Danny White’s record failed to hit the charts (at the same time other act produced by Toussaint, The Meters, released their album) and so Danny grew disenchanted with the music business and this was his last ever recording. We could lament that decision but it’s better to enjoy the great songs he developed, and so we present you this gem!
