ALDEMARO ROMERO & MONNA BELL 'La Nueva Onda En Mexico' (LP 220 GR)
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

Few people have managed to combine aspects of classical, popular and experimental music from the second half of the 20th Century in a brilliant and original way. Aldemaro Romero, the orchestra conductor born in Valencia, Venezuela in 1928 arrived in Mexico in the mid-fifties on his way to the U.S. where, in 1952, he was called to accompany and arrange the recordings of singer Alfredo Sadel for RCA Victor in New York. While he was there, in 1955 he recorded the LP “Dinner in Caracas”, which became a world-wide hit, putting Venezuelan popular music in a modern and cosmopolitan light for the first time outside its borders. Later on, he’d give us another dose with “Venezuelan Fiesta”. Shortly afterwards, in Mexico City, which at the time was the record production capital of Latin America, he recorded the LP “Criollisima” at the RCA Victor studios with Pancho Cárdenas at the mixing board. Cárdenas was responsible for the brilliant, spacious sound of many of the records out at the time, especially the recordings of the sonoramic Juan García Esquvel. Romero and Esquivel had more than one thing in common. In addition to being piano virtuosos with a futuristic sense for popular music revitalized with vocal arrangements and original instrumentation, they each experimented in the recording studio and maintained a mutual admiration and friendship. Esquivel and his group even played at the Primer Festival Onda Nueva in Caracas in 1971, right along side Astor Piazzola, Dave Grustin, Augusto Algueró and Elmer Bernstein, among others.

ARMANDO PERAZA 'Wild Thing' (LP 220 Gr)

In the Havana “Barrio” where Armando Peraza was born (no date available!) young boys learn to play the congas as nturally as their United States or European counterparts might learn to play ball. But if the ability is commonplace, the special depth or power that always separates a star from the crowd is rare.

Armanzo Peraza was one of the rare ones and his boyhood friendship with two other gifted players, Mongo Santamaria and Patato, only served to hone his skills to greater magnitude and strength.

BEN VAUGHN 'Designs In Music' (LP)
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

What do the american TV series That 70s Show and Third Rock From The Sun, Alex Chilton, Ween, Swingers, and the first album recorded enterely in a car have in common? One man. Ben Vaughn. Composer, producer, recording artist. A man Village Voice decribes as having a "sound so pure and spontaneous it sounds instantly classic."

Be it sitcoms, TV commercials, film soundtracks or radio play, somewhere in the world right now, Vaughn's music is being heard. Since 1986, he has been winning fans with his unique take on pop culture. Eight albums and a ten year career in Hollywood hace allowed Ben's music to travel to the far reaches of the earth. And with his latest, he brings it al together. Perfectly.

Designs In Music encapsulates this journey. Inspired by late-night drives to his weekend getaway in the Mojave Desert where the only station he cold pick was Palm Springs easy-listening station KWXY, Ben felt ready to combine everything he had learned through the years into one recording: The magic of those late-night broadcasts as well as his years spent as a composer producer and recording artist are represented equally in this project. But with a vitality that is in the moment, the now.

"It's obviously a tribute," says Ben, "but it's not a pristine re-creation of something from 1962. I wasn't really interested in making that kind of record. To me, instrumental music is a vibrant art form that's always ready for new ideas. And I've got a ton of them."

Ideas that explode in a pallet of many colors, of saxophones and trumpets, clarinets and trombones, of boss organ, bongos, wordless falsetto vocalizing, and Ben Vaughn's own tough yet warety guitar work.

We've been fans of Vaughn's music for twenty years, and though we've released some of his records on our other label Munster (Rambler 65, Cubist Blues, The Prehistoric Ben Vaughn...), we felt Designs In Music one was for Vampisoul! Designs In Music... a vibrant snapshot of instrumental music's past, present and future !!!!

BENITEZ AND NEBULA 'Night Life / Essence Of Life' (LP)
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

Eddie Benitez's story is full of contrasts: a classical trained child prodigy turned Latin Rock superstar while hanging out in his teen years with the likes of Charlie Palmieri (his guardian angel, as he still names him), Louie Ramirez, Tito Puente and pretty much all the crew from the Fania All-Stars... and making a name for himself while at it. His debut album on Fania, “Night Life," brought him to the spotlight in 1976, earning his band Nebula rave reviews and the props of many of his peers, including names like George Benson, Al DiMeola and Carlos Santana. He also has the distinction of being the first Latino act ever to be featured at the mythical CBGB's. His career, not to mention his life, was screech halted twice, first with cancer and most recently this past November when a massive heart attack almost swept him from us. But here he is back,on his own, back with his band Nebula and, sooner than you may expect, back with a brand new project.

CACHAO Y SU RITMO CALIENTE 'Descargas En Miniatura Part. 2' (LP 220 Gr)
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

Of all the -many and excellent- Cuban “descargas” that ever have been, this one we proudly present you has been the most influentual, hot and important of them all -and allegedly the first one. Which is the logical accomplishment of an outstanding musician and conductor.

Israel “Cachao” Lopez has been compared with Duke Ellington by sociologist Raúl Fernández, who explains that this double bass player transformed Cuban music in the same way that “the Duke” did, making Jazz evolve from a dance form into a more abstract style for the listener. Fernandez argues that Cachao had the same influence in Cuban music. For the first time, Cuban popular music was presented as a music that could be actually listened to, rather than just danced to.

This “miniature” Descargas, recorded in 1957 live at the studio for the Panart label -after the success of the live sessions of the same name at the Tropicana club-, were named that way because of the maximum time (from two to three minutes) that the musicians had to record each piece, and they really were equally influenced by Son and Rumba rather than only by Jazz.

These fabulous live acts brought fame to many of the musicians involved in them, such as Tata Güines, a master percussionist, whose influentical conga style was required in New York. So was Cachao, who flies to New York to be part of the Tito Rodríguez orchestra from 1964 to 1966. Admiring personalities include Andy García, who has been fighting to get Cachao nominated for the Grammys and claims this album to be the best “bogaloo” recording ever made.

The Cuban Regime would end with these Jazz sessions in the 60’s. But we still have here the wonderful, unique Cuban jazz flavor, trapped and recorded at its peak in Cachao’s “Descargas”,  presented here in TWO DIFFERENT LP’s (number 1 being the original album and number 2 songs from the same 57-61 era) and a digipack CD (which combines both LPs). 3 different ways to feel the heat of the best Cuban music.

CANNIBAL & THE HEADHUNTERS 'Land Of 1000 Dances' (LP 220 gr)
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

While you were listening to some high school teacher, these guys were sharing stages with the Stones and the Beatles. Cannibal & The Headhunters were born as a 4-piece vocal band in East L.A. and became immortal with their "LAND OF 1000 DANCES" -and that glorious "na-nananana" part. The song climbed to every U.S. chart and soon - when Richard "Scar" Lopez, Bobby "Rabbit" Jaramillo, Joe Jaramillo and Frankie "Cannibal" Garcia (whose nickname was born when he bit another kid during a fight) were 15, 16, 17 and 18 years old- the band was requested to tour with the Motown Revue, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Righteous Brothers and many other bands all across the U.S. They also appeared on a number of television shows such as American Bandstand, Shebang, Hollywood A Go Go, Hullabaloo and Where The Action Is. In this anthology you'll find not only the radio-edited version of that hit single, but also a long-lost unedited version (the one they originally cut) and a live version crediting all their might.

Cannibal and the Headhunters' style was molded on the soulful sounds of 60's Motown vocal groups, and their approach was absorbed by many Mexican American groups in East Los Angeles at the time, which shaped this community's own music scene, creating a style of its own known as the East Side Sound. In despite of the fabulous success of "Land of 1000 Dances" Cannibal & The Headhunters were much more than a one-hit-wonder case. These kids hit hard and they recorded their good share of amazing classics. And here is the proof: a complete compilation showing all their might and talents, mixing rock, doo-wop, Soul --all in that East L.A. chicano style. ¡A bailar!

CELOFUNK 'Celofunk' (LP 220 gr)
   Add to basketBasketAdd to favorites

At first they started funking out at all the small clubs in Madrid with their cover set of songs, preaching the big funk classics and after a while they kept spreading the word but, this time, with an original set of their own songs, then little by little have been climbing over the non-original material. “Celofunk” (the record), is a success at a creative composition level as much as the production, done by the band and Daniel Alcover.

With  a very actual sound, they admit having some Betty Davis, Lyn Collins, Bill Withers, The Meters, Stevie Wonder or James Brown influences. The vocals are one of the most remarkable factors in Celofunk which isn’t an usual characteristic in funk groups and that duplicate the expansive wave of this band.

Contagious as a virus that catches you by surprise and rises you to the top. Your senses will feel it and your body will enjoy it. Celofunk has very clear ideas and they don’t need anybody guiding them thru funk’s paths. Someone said “the revolution won’t be televised” and with Celofunk, the revolution departs from the heart and it’s  radiated for all minds and bodies that are trusting in groove’s salvation!!. They got here to redeem us from boredom and monotony. Ladies and gentleman, we are saved!!!

IRAKERE 'Chekere-Son' (LP) (220 Gr)

“Irakere was the synthesis of every influence that had been played in Cuban music. One can’t talk about the Cuban artistic history without mentioning Irakere. It was the disclaimer of a Caribean country which took its place in the international music scene. Irareke was a tremendous source of inspiration for the young generation” - Carlos del Puerto.

Writer Luc Delannoy, author of the Bible “Caliente! - A history of Latin Jazz” and one of the world’s most recognized Jazz experts; considers Irakere as “The most important Cuban band in the latest 50 years”. And he is not wrong. The influence of Irakee in Cuban music of the latest decades is impossible to measure: more than a band, we are talking about an institution who was been a school for countless musicians who would get success worldwide since Chucho Valdés (son of famous Bebo Valdés) founded Irakere in 1973.

In 1978, Irakere won a Grammy for Latin music. Ever since that moment, they influenced every musician to come out of Cuba, both in Jazz and Dance music. In the U.S.A., Irakere became a model for the developement of new musical fussions. The impact that the band had in the NY scene with their live performance of that year in the Newport Jazz Festival was an ultimate event in the history of Jazz. Former band members such as Arturo Sandoval or Paquito D’Rivera have gained recognition and success all over the world, playing with Dizzy Gillespie or being awarded with several of the fist Grammys ever presented to Latin Jazz.

Chucho Valdés, writer of classics such as “Claudia”, has been commanding that institution for more than 30 years. Irakere created a sound that mixed Jazz, european traditional music, Rock, Funk and the rythmic Cuban traditions -which would be enriched later on with Afro-Cuban and Electronica influences.

nd in “Chekere-Son’ “, you can listen to a selection from the finest of a repertoire that has marked entire generations of musicians. Absolutely essential to understand and enjoy both Cuban music and Latin Jazz history.

The quality of Jaime Delgado Aparicio´s (Lima 1943-1983) music is not only born of his natural talent, but from many years of study (mostly in the US) and investigation. From his first award for his piano skills at fifteen, to his position as conductor of the (no less) Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Peru, Jaime Delgado Aparicio´s career is one of no equal in Peru´s music history. We are talking about heavyweight, probably the most talented jazz musician in Peru, and maybe Southamerica. It is not frequent that an individual leaves a permanent mark in the musical history of a country. In Peru, in the 60' s and 70' s, Jaime Delgado Aparicio, a pianist and composer, promoted and exposed all different styles of jazz to all social levels, helping many young students and professional musicians to understand this musical language.

One of Joe's slammin post-boogaloo albums -- with great production, a very soulful vibe, and a good hard sound throughout! JOHNNY ADAMS 'Heart & Soul'

Born Lathan John Adams 5 January 1932 in New Orleans, and forever known as the “Tan Canary” for his extraordinary set of soulfully soaring vocal cords, Johnny Adams was a professional gospel singer before crossing over to the secular world in 1959, when his first recordings appeared on Ric Records. Three years later he secured a minor R&B success with “A Losing Battle”, a slow ballad co-written by Dr. John. In 1968 he joined Shelby Singleton's SSS International outlet and scored a hit the following year with “Reconsider Me”, an inspired piece of country-soul. Although  subsequent releases failed to match this performance, the strong HEART AND SOUL followed. Johnny signed with Atlantic Records in the early '70s, but his work there was disappointing. A later move to Ariola Records resulted in a remake of Conway Twitty's two-year-old country hit, “After All The Good Is Gone”, giving Adams a 1978 US R&B chart entry. He recorded for various labels, notably including Rounder (where he recorded a famous Doc Pomus set), until his unfortunate cancer-related death on September 14, 1998. This compilation includes the best from his Nashville period (late 60’s early 70’s): to many, his most fabulous work. The bulk of this album is the homonimous “Heart And Soul”, a rare album by this sweet southern soul singer -- recorded for the great SSS International label on 1969, with Shelby Singleton at the helm producing. The record's got that strange mix of styles that you'll hear on the best of the Nashville soul sessions -- and there's a lot more to the sound than meets the eye. It includes his single “Lonely Man”, plus a bunch of other smokey cuts like “Losing Battle”, “Real Live Living Hurtin' Man”, “I Can't Be All Bad”, and “Reconsider Me”, with his death-defying falsetto range. One of the most famous popular singles New Orleans has ever produced, with a prodigious voice that allowed him to sing equally soul, blues, gospel, R&B and jazz -and shoot chills down your spine in every stile, in his home town there are just three cathegories of male vocalists: Aaron Neville, Johnny Adams and the rest.

“LATIN BOOGALOO IS HERE!” – that was the sound of the mid-60’s. Johnny played an indelible part in the creation of this new style, cutting three superb albums in the late ‘60’s and then 3 excellent post-boogaloo LPs in the ‘70’s.  But, unlike a lot of his boogaloo contemporaries, he was an extremely versatile musician - a multi-instrumentalist - and singer.  And such skill undoubtedly helped him record some of the most potent tracks of the era. Cotique became one of the finest Latin boogaloo/Latin soul labels in the second half of the 1960’s and Johnny’s first hit, Boogaloo Blues, undoubtedly helped them achieve this.  This is the perfect blend of Latin soul and Jazz and, now as much as then, it is young, alive and swinging.

"La Nueva Onda del Brasil" (or The New Wave of Brasil) is a fantastic album of "brasilian groove" brought to you by the genious of LUIZ EÇA, the pianist of the historic TAMBA TRIO / TAMBA 4 (a fundamental piece in Brazilian popular music) and a very important figure of the birth and development of Bossanova. On this very rare record Luiz Eca is surrounded by many outstanding musicians: Nana Vasconcelos, Claudio Roditi, Nelson Angelo, Mauricio Maestro, Wilson Simonal... The album was recorded in 1970, but then remained unreleased until 1978, when it came out only in the Mexican label RVV. Includes both standards and originals, all performed on a very free style, some sort of very late and evolutioned Bossa mixed with Jazz and a little bit of Soul... A window open to the brasilian musical meltin´ pot of the end of he 60s it could be decribed as "the White Album that SERGIO MENDES & BRASIL 66 did never recorded"! Our reissue has been mastered from first hand tapes, and the sound quality is top notch, much better than a previous CD version with a different title. A mint copy of the original LP can cost about $500 so get ours and save a fortune!

Beware… this album is a TRUE REVELATION! The only album recorded (in the  Phase 8!) by this Uruguayan band, formed by Roberto Giordano, bass player of TOTEM (see our release VAMPI035 LP/CD), with the first plain intention of making some extra money by playing hits or classics from the times -mixed with songs of their own- in wedding or private parties and TV shows. The record itself was recorded in order to be sold in those “events”. Musically, there are echoes from CAL TJADER, DEODATO, HENRI MANCINI, BILLY COBHAM... But in a Candombe Beat key: utterly rhythmic and contagious! This is one of the most fabulous and rarest “Rare Grooves” ever released! The original copy of this album does not even appear on any website and we fear that, did a well preserved copy finally appear, its price in euros could have 3 zeroes on it... With liner notes and pictures. LP on heavy vinyl.
