ATOM RHUMBA
was formed in 1995, with a line up that included:
Sergio Llanos (guitar + vocals) Alberto L. Martín (drums)
Rober (guitar + vocals) Jose Matilla (bass). After a few months,
Igor Álvarez joins the band playing Alto Sax (Tenor Sax nowadays).
During their early days Atom Rhumba was just a side-project, and
their work was affeccted by the frequent absences of it's members
(Rober was way during a whole year, between 1996-67!). 25/5/96:
First 7" edited and recorded with the Alehop! label, including
two tracks: "No Square" and "Bad Record". It
wouldn´t hit the stores until one year later. 29/11/96: A.R.
play their first gig ever, in La Katrena (Barakaldo), where they
leave the audience stunned with their Theremin abuse.
In June 1997, A.R. record "Calypso" (included in Munster's
compilation "Punkin"), "Lightning Girl"
(included on the Nancy Sinatra´s tribute also in Munster),
and "Party Dress" (inc. on Alehop!´s
international compilation "La Cagarruta Sónica").
Last week in November 1997 they record their critically acclaimed
first LP, "Hormonal Riot".
1998: they win the best new band in Euskadi and
2º in Spain awards at the Villa de Bilbao competition (the
most famous and prestigious band contest in Spain). November 1998:
"Switch On" appears on the "Se Acabó
la Tregua" Munster Records compilation. March 1999: Gorka Pastor
(La Secta) ocassionaly joins the band to play... maracas! On the
last week of July 1999 the band recors their second album
"Dirt Shots". "Switch On" is included
on the Barcelona's BAM International Festival compilation, becoming
the only Spanish band chosen by the foreign promotors. "Funky
Town" appears at the "Munster records Goes Hi-Fi"
compilation.
- December 1999: Rioja (formerly in Bongolocos and Munsterland)
joins in replacing Jose on bass.
January 2000: they record "Mata la
Música Disco" , included on the Eskorbuto
Tribute compilation and "Evil Hearted Ava" for
The Flamin' Grovies’ Tribute released by Safety Pin. October
21st : Javi joins the band on bass.
On early December they get in the studio again to record their third
album "Chasing The Onagro", produced by Mick Collins.
The album and the band gain critical acclaim outside Spain, here
they are just hailed to the sky and the record appears in every
top-ten of the year. Jan 2001: A.R. record "Downtown",
included on Munster's Johnny Thunders´ Tribute "This
one's for Johnny".

May 2001: Natxo Beltrán
becomes the new Atom Rhumba drummer.
"Chasin' the Onagro" is released in France
by the mythical label Skydog with great response in sales and audiences
in the tour they make in that country. 04-2002: Álvaro Segovia
enters as new guitar player, filling Sergio´s shoes.
About the entrance of Álvaro, answering in a recent interview
to the question “Why did you choose Álvaro?”
JABI: Just because he is a wonderful guy and because he plays like
a motherfucker. You must try with anyone you can, because we are
very few people doing this in the world, whatever the reason is.
We tried and there was no problem at all, we kept on and we found
out that, being such a good player as he is, ideas just flow much
faster!!
ROBER!: It was a wild bet. We knew about his technique but we were
afraid that he didn’t fit the band perfectly because he was
playing in bands who were not exactly of the same style as us.But
he has fit in, more than perfectly, miraculously, in the latest
songs he is adding some really “rhumber” touches.
August 2003: They record their latest
album, “Backbone Ritmo”, produced by
Kaki Arkarazo. The advance single will be “Gone” and
will be released with mixes by Josetxo Anitua (Cancer Moon) and
Guillermo Piccolini (Venus, Pachuco Cadaver)
